Two questions keep turning up in the Facebook groups, in different words but with the same worry underneath. Is €25,000 really enough for eighty guests? Is €10,000 enough for twenty? I want to answer that honestly, because vague reassurance doesn't help anyone plan properly. And because some couples read what a wedding in France really costs and decide it isn't for them — before they've looked at where their choices actually are.

It isn't a cheaper version of home

Let's start with the honest part. A wedding in France is not a cheaper version of a wedding at home. I've said that for years, and I still mean it.

What moves your total more than anything else isn't any single supplier. It's three things:

  • Your region. A wedding in Provence and a wedding in the Lot can differ by tens of thousands of euros for the same number of guests.
  • Your guest numbers. Each extra guest adds a little to almost every part of the day — food, drink, seating, transport and accommodation.
  • Your timing. An off-season date or a weekday can bring the venue cost down by a large margin.

Get those three right for your budget, and everything else becomes much easier to plan.

But within your budget, there's more room than you think

Once your region, guest numbers and timing are set, there's real room to bring your total in — without the day feeling any smaller for it. Some of it comes down to the type of venue you choose. Some of it is about which suppliers you genuinely need, and which you don't. And a surprising amount of it is about your own people. When I got married, a friend made my cake, my sister designed my stationery, and another friend conducted the ceremony. It's still one of my favourite things about my wedding day — and everyone I asked told me afterwards how honoured they felt to be asked. We don't do this enough anymore. Your friends and family want to be part of your day, not just guests at it.

Saving isn't the same as cutting corners

There's a difference between spending wisely and cutting the things that hold your day together. There are a few places I would never recommend saving: good food, a good photographer, and a proper Plan B. Protect those, and the savings you make elsewhere won't show. Nobody at your wedding knows what you could have had. They take the day as it comes.

Where to start

No blog post can tell you exactly where your own budget has room. It depends on your venue, your guest list and what actually matters to the two of you. What I can tell you is that there's a way through this that doesn't mean compromising on your day. I've put together a free guide that walks you through exactly where couples find that room, area by area — from the venue and the ceremony to food, flowers and music.
